We’re in the fortunate position of having some great players in the band, and obviously, great players a wanted everywhere! This summer two of our players, principal euphonium, Paul Miller and Principal Eb bass player, Richard Lovett were fortunate enough to play with the XBY concert band at the “Olympics for Music” – the 4 yearly World Music Contest at Kerkrade in the Netherlands. They were representing the United Kingdom in a field of fifteen wind bands from around the globe.
Having practiced some really challenging pieces, Percy Granger’s Lincolnshire Posy, Bert Appermont’s Trencadis and Peter Graham’s Metropolis 1927, the guys and the band travelled to the town just outside Maastrict and put on a fantastic performance gaining a Gold Medal in the World Championships!
It was a fantastic weekend, much music was made, beer drunk and fun was had by all. The soloists (including Paul) were congratulated and complemented by the adjudicators – and the quality of the playing, together with the expressive interpretation of the music by the MD John Hargreaves, was featuring heavily in the comments.
